The Biblical Zoo works to reintroduce and strengthen populations of endangered animals (some already extinct) from the Israeli landscape.

As a meeting point of 3 continents, Israeli nature has always been rich with animals from diverse habitats. Already in biblical times, the wilderness landscapes were described with a variety of mammals (bears, lions, deer and more), birds (birds of prey such as the Griffon Vulture and Lappet-faced Vulture, migrating birds such as storks, and nocturnal raptors such as the Little Owl, Tawny Owl and Barn Owl), reptiles, insects and more. The writings of Tristram and Aharoni, who toured the country in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, also reported skies full of birds of prey and many impressive wild animals observed in landscapes such as Nahal Amud and the Shephelah hills.

During the 20th century, development and construction exposed these habitats and animals to ecological pressures that reduced populations and even led to extinction. These pressures continue today, and the situation requires active conservation, breeding, habitat protection and reintroduction efforts. The Biblical Zoo places great importance on leading and supporting these projects, in full cooperation with the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Society for the Protection of Nature.

Read more about our projects: the conservation, breeding and reintroduction of the Persian Fallow Deer, Griffon Vulture, Ferruginous Duck, Hula Painted Frog, Eurasian Otter, Lesser Kestrel and Arabian Oryx.

Our team works with love and a deep sense of mission. Remember — every visit to the zoo helps us continue this work and contribute significant resources to wildlife conservation in Israel and worldwide.
