Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is a broad term for a variety of tools and aids, both technological and otherwise, that provide customized communication options for individuals with verbal or non-verbal speech difficulties.

The AAC system enables people with speech difficulties to communicate easily with their surroundings using gestures, sign language, international visual symbols, and, of course, advanced technological tools such as iPads and computers with dedicated software. The specific communication tool is tailored to each individual based on their personal abilities, needs, and desires, as well as the assessment of the professional team accompanying them, in collaboration with their family and loved ones.

What are communication boards?

Communication boards are an AAC tool characterized by collections of symbols designed according to international standards, making them accessible for use at any age, level, or language. Each communication board consists of a collection of symbols in a general or specific context, from which the user can construct sentences and express their needs, desires, feelings, and experiences. Communication boards can be used in combination with various technological tools, allowing for the selection of symbols through touch, pointing, or even eye-tracking, as well as the vocalization of selected words and the personalization of symbols and their meanings.

Communication boards at the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens

In a joint initiative between the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens and MASHY – The Educational Rehabilitation Center for Children and Youth (R.A.), communication boards have been installed to make the visitor experience accessible to the entire public. The boards are designed according to international standards and feature a collection of symbols specifically for the experience of encountering animals, spending time outdoors, and navigating between areas and exhibits throughout the site. Additionally, each board includes a QR code that allows visitors to use the communication boards directly on their personal smartphone or iPad. The communication boards were developed by the professional AAC team at MASHY to best suit the zoo visitor experience and make it accessible to the general public.

For those who struggle with speech, AAC tools are essential and significant for the ability to participate in daily life, manage relationships, and maintain quality of life. They allow for personal expression and richer dialogue with those around them, encourage feelings of success, competence, and partnership, and provide an important opportunity to take part in social and community life. Even for children who have difficulty acquiring speech and language, using alternative communication channels provides a vital foundation for building linguistic infrastructure and acquiring interpersonal communication skills, which promote emotional, cognitive, and social development.
