Interesting To Know
The blue morpho is one of the largest butterflies, and many birds prey on it. To avoid being eaten, when it flaps its wings, the bright blue color suddenly disappears, revealing the brown underside of its wings. This makes it difficult for birds to track its movement in flight. When it lands and folds its wings, the brown color provides camouflage, and the eye-spot pattern deters approaching predators.
Sixteen weeks pass from the moment the caterpillar hatches until the butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. After emergence, the adults live for three weeks.
