Madagascar
The Madagascar hissing cockroach belongs to the order of Blattodea, within the class of Insecta.
Unlike most roaches, this one lacks wings and is slow, although it does have a unique characteristic – the ability to make noises!
Through the breathing opening at its fourth joint near its stomach, the hissing roach can blow air quickly and make a whistling sound, which is reminiscent of a whisper. This behavior is observed mainly when the roach encounters a predator or is troubled by a touch.
Like most of its order, the hissing roach is an omnivore. In the thick of the rainforests, it is nourished by rotted leaves, by fallen fruits, and by the corpses of animals, as well as any other organic source which can satisfy its hunger.
Its body is relatively large, measuring 5-7 cm, and its slow and calm personality has made it a sought-after pet.
The male hissing cockroach has two small horns on its chest. The female has a smooth chest. After mating, the female lays a sack of eggs, which she incubates inside her body until the offspring emerge. This way, she ensures that no predator can snatch or prey upon the eggs.
Lifespan: one to three years
