Guided Tours

Ecology with a Focus on Israeli Nature

How many species are there on Earth?
Scientists estimate there are about 8.7 million plant and animal species in the world, of which only 1.6 million have been documented.
During the tour we'll try to answer the question of why species diversity matters. We'll learn about Israel's ecological uniqueness resulting from its location between three continents, and understand how this location affects species richness and habitat diversity.
Human involvement often harms the ecological balance in nature, to the point of extinction risk for many animals. We'll visit exhibits of animals that once lived in Israel and have unfortunately gone extinct in our region.
At the "Story of a Drop" complex, we'll learn about human impact on native fish populations through overfishing and the release of non-native species into our water sources.
We'll get to know the ways the zoo tries to reduce the damage caused by humans by participating in and leading nature conservation projects - reintroducing Persian fallow deer into the wild, incubating vulture eggs, nurturing breeding nuclei (to protect endangered species), and more..
