All animals, from the snail to the tiger, belong to the animal kingdom. From the kingdom, animal classification continues into classes, families, and species.
What distinguishes the different classes? What do we have in common with chimpanzees? Which class does the bat belong to? Do all birds fly? Does the crocodile belong to the reptile class or the amphibian class?
The field of classification (taxonomy) is complex and fascinating. During the tour we'll learn about the characteristics of different classes and practice classifying various animals into classes.
In the small animals house we'll learn about the extraordinary life cycle of the amphibian class. We'll visit the petting zoo, where we'll meet the animals up close — pet mammal fur, feel reptile scales, and learn about the differences between lizards and snakes. We'll also be impressed by the diverse feather collection of the various birds around the zoo.
