How Do Persian Fallow Deer Adapt to Life in the Wild, and Can We Predict Which Individuals Will Succeed?
The Persian fallow deer, once extinct in Israel, has returned to its natural habitat thanks to decades of conservation efforts led by the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority. Every year, deer born and raised at the zoo are released into protected nature reserves across the country, contributing to the restoration of a species that disappeared from the region more than a century ago.
But release is only the beginning of the story.
The first weeks and months in the wild are a critical period of adjustment. Each deer must learn where to find food and water, recognize potential dangers, navigate unfamiliar landscapes, and establish a stable home range in which it can survive and reproduce.
My research follows these newly released animals using advanced GPS collars that record their location every few minutes. This detailed tracking allows us to observe, almost in real time, how the deer adapt to their new environment and how their behavior changes as they become established in the wild.
The study focuses on three key questions:
- How do movement patterns change over time?
- How and when do deer establish a permanent home range?
- How do they select and use different habitats during the adaptation process?
We expect most individuals to progress from an initial exploration phase, during which they travel widely through unfamiliar territory, to a more stable exploitation phase, characterized by repeated use of familiar areas and predictable movement patterns. However, not all deer follow the same trajectory, and understanding these individual differences is a central goal of the research.
Another key question is whether these differences can be predicted before the animals are released.
While still at the zoo, each deer participates in a standardized behavioral assessment that measures its response to an approaching threat. The distance at which the animal chooses to flee provides an indicator of its behavioral type, whether it is naturally bolder or more cautious.
By combining these behavioral tests with detailed GPS tracking data, we hope to identify the traits associated with successful adaptation to life in the wild. The findings will help conservationists improve future reintroduction programs, increase the survival of released animals, and strengthen the long-term recovery of this remarkable species.
This research represents the unique partnership between academic science and hands-on conservation, where every data point collected contributes directly to protecting one of Israel's most iconic endangered mammals and ensuring that future generations will continue to encounter Persian fallow deer roaming freely in the wild.
