Research at the Jerusalem Zoo

Modern zoos have great advantages as research centres - The variety of exotic species, the professional staff, the recording of data and the international cooperation between zoos. These allow to conduct studies in various fields such as animal behavior and welfare, veterinary medicine, reproduction, genetics, nutrition and others. Because of the importance of these fields to animal and nature conservation, research has been identified as one of the major roles of modern zoos by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in their recently published Conservation Strategy. The Jerusalem Zoo has adopted this strategy and has been investing significantly in research activities. The Jerusalem Zoo initiates and conducts independent research, cooperates with researchers from various academic institutions and zoos and supports research through its Prof. Aharon Shulov Fund. Furthermore, to bring research closer to the community, the Zoo encourages small-scale studies by zoo volunteers and staff and by school and university students.
