Yellow crowned amazon

Scientific name: Amazona ochrocephala
In the wild: common in South America
Jerusalem zoo: Few individuals
In the Bible: the parrot does not appear in the Bible.
The Yellow crowned Amazon also known as the Yellow-fronted Parrot can be found from central Mexico to Peru and Brazil. It lives in rainforests but also can be found in cultivated land and urban areas. The bird is 35 cm long and colored mostly green. The Amazon has a yellow face and crown and white eye rings with orange eyes. Males and females have the same coloring. They can be found living in pairs and tend to build their nest together in a tree cavity. The female lays three to four eggs. The chicks stay in the nest between 21 to 70 days. The diet of the Amazon includes fruit, nuts, seeds and berries. An Amazon can reach the age of 70 years! The Amazons are very popular as pets. One reason is their ability to learn to talk quite well. Even though this parrot can be bred in captivity, the popularity of Yellow-headed Amazons as pets continues to fuel poaching, which has nearly driven this species to extinction in the wild. The population has declined from 70,000 to 7,000 in the past two decades. An estimated 90% of poached Yellow-headed Amazons die before they are sold.
