The Western crowned pigeon, (or Blue Crowned Pigeon) is a large bird and is considered to be one of the most beautiful species of Pigeon family. Its' feathers are royal-blue-grey in color and it has a blue lacy crest over the head and dark blue mask feathers around its eyes. The Habitat and distribution areas of the Crowned pigeon are the Tropical forests in the island of New-Guinea, which lies near Australia, and in several other small islands. The crowned-pigeon is vulnerable to extinction because of habitat destruction (logging and forest clearing) and extensive hunting for its feathers. The Crowned pigeons feed on fruit and seeds. Social structure is pairs or small groups and both females and males are similar but males are often larger than females. The Jerusalem Zoo has 3 species of Crowned pigeons. You can observe the Western crowned pigeon together with the Southern Crowned pigeon at the Tropical Aviary. The Victoria Crowned pigeon can be observed at the Australian yard.
