Lories and lorikeets

Scientific name

Humankind and animals – a connection to be severed
The Lorikeet Aviary is one of the special places that emphasize the relationship between humans and animals. We all enjoy the time spent with animals. Some of them provide us with warmth and love and some with a sense of closeness and interest. There is no end to the joy that can be absorbed from observing their ways of life. The ecological biodiversity and abundance of habitats are an inspiration for our world and culture. The people who are involved in changing the earth for their own good have the responsibility of conservation and protection of animals.
The experiential encounter between man and the Lorries can only take place in a place like the Zoo. In order to attain closeness and direct connection with the parrots, we must respect, appreciate and take care of them. The visit in the Aviary connects the visitors to the animals by means of love and respect. We all hope that these experiences will promote actions of animal protection in the wild and preservation of their habitats, to ensure their future and wellbeing.
Lories and lorikeets are found in wooded habitats from Indonesia and the Philippines, through New-Guinea and Australia to the Pacific Ocean islands. These birds live and breed in pairs, but may create large flocks around food concentrations (e.g. flowering trees) and also during off-breeding season. Lories and lorikeets have specialized brush-tipped tongue that allows them to collect nectar and pollen. Many island dwelling species are endangered by habitat destruction and introduction of rats, which predate on the Lories, their eggs and chicks, to the islands. Naturally, they eat mostly flower nectar and pollen. In captivity, Lories require a special diet of nectar replacements and certain fruits and vegetables.

Come and see the lories and you can even feed them with special necter sold at the entrance to the lori Aviary.
