Crested wood-partridge

Crested wood-partridge

Scientific name: Rollulus rouloul
Situation in the wild: Threatended
Jerusalem Zoo: small group at the Tropical aviary
Wood partridges live are solitary or live in pairs in the Rainforests of South-East Asia, where they forage for fruit, seeds and small invertebrates. However, today the species is threatened by the heavy logging of its native forests. Wood-partridges are an interesting species because unlike related species (pheasants, chickens, quails) wood-partridge chicks cannot independently eat after they hatch and need to be fed by their parents.
