Scientific name:
Casuarius casuarius
In the Wild: In danger of extinction
Jerusalem Zoo: Exhibited at the Australian exhibit
In the Bible: Not mentioned
The Cassowary is a strong bird, weighing up to 60 Kg. Like the African Ostrich and South-American Ria, it cannot fly. It is identified by the prominent “helmet” on top of its head, although the role of the helmet is still unclear. The female lays 2-3 clutches with 3-5 dark green eggs in each clutch, but it is the male that broods over the eggs (49-61 days) and cares for the chicks. It's diet consists of fruits, arthropods and small vertebrates. The main habitat and distribution of the Cassowary are wooded areas in northern Australia and New-Guinea.
