The Jerusalem Zoo: A few individuals at the Eagle owl exhibit
In the Bible: The Eagle owl in mentioned in the Bible
Eagle-owls live mainly in mountainous and rocky regions in various climates – from deserts to cold climate, in Europe, Asia, the Middle-East and North-Africa. They are carnivorous and feed mostly on rodents, but may also take down large animals such as large birds, deer-fawns and foxes. Eagle-owls keep the same partners for life but are also solitary. The eagle-owl is the largest owl. Adult eagle-owls do not have natural predators, but human encroachment to their habitat has caused the population to decline. In Europe efforts are being made to reintroduce the eagle-owls to areas from which they disappeared. The ear tufts above the eagle-owl's eyes are not ears. They do assist in directing noise to the ears that are hidden behind the head feathers. Hearing is a major sense for the nocturnal eagle-owl, both for intra-species communication and for locating and catching prey.
The Frey Veterinary Hospital at the Jerusalem Zoo, focuses part of it efforts in tending to injured wild birds of prey. The most common injuries are secondary poisoning (eating poisoned prey), electrocution from high power lines, illegal hunting and more. Wounded birds are collected from the wild and are brought to the Zoo by INPA rangers. These birds are provided with veterinary care and hospitalization. If it is possible, these birds are released back into the wild upon recovery. In situations where the birds cannot be released, due to severity of injury, The Zoo staff takes care to find a good home for them like this exhibit. The Eurasian Eagle owl exhibit was built with the generous help of the Friends of the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo Association and you can see the Eagle owls up close at their exhibit during your next visit to the Zoo.
