Cockatiel

Cockatiel

Scientific name: Nymphicus hollandicus
In the wild: common in Australia
Jerusalem zoo: pair at children's zoo
In the Bible: the Cockatiel does not appear in the Bible
The cockatiel is the smallest of the cockatoo family and is common all over Australia. They prefer living in open country close to water. The cockatiel has a distinctive erectile crest. This crest expresses the bird's emotional state. For example, the crest is vertical when the bird is excited and flattened when the bird is angry or defensive. The cockatiels are monogamous and pairs for life. They feed on seeds, grains, fruits and berries. They can be somewhat of a pest for farmers raiding on grains and seed in the fields. The cockatiel is a common pet, and are easy to take care of.
