Scientific name: Hieraaetus fasciatus Situation in the wild: Least threatened Situation in Israel: In danger of extinction The Jerusalem Zoo: Individuals at the Birds of Prey Aviary
The habitat and distribution areas of the Bonelli’s eagle are mountainous, rocky and gorgy areas in East Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle-East. In Israel the population declined from 50 pairs in the past to 10-15 pairs today, due to poisoning, human interference, reduced food availability, and egg and chick stealing and now this species is endangered in Israel. It feeds mainly birds and small mammals. Unlike other eagles, Bonelli’s eagle is a very swift flyer and can even capture birds in flight. The social structure is solitary or in pairs.
