Scientific name: Eclectus roratus
Scientific name: Eclectus roratus
Situation in the wild: Vulnerable
The Jerusalem Zoo: Breeding pair
The habitat and distribution areas of the Eclectus Parrot are the Solomon Islands, Moluccas, New Guinea and North-East Australia. The Elcectus Parrot dwells in the Rainforest and nests in high, thick tree hollows. Eclectus are Polygamous: males can be with a few females and vice versa. The nesting female relies on a number of males to provide her with food and they compete for the right to be the father of her offspring. The first researchers to meet this species regarded the males and females as two different species because of their phenotypic differences. The Males is almost all green and the females are red and blue in coloration. Eclectus feed on fruit, flowers, leaves, seeds and nuts. Eclectus has a very long digestive system and is adapted to a rich fiber diet.
