Blue-throated Macaw

Blue-throated Macaw

Blue-throated Macaw

Scientific name:
Ara glaucogularis
In the wild: Critically endangered
Jerusalem Zoo: Breeding

The Blue-throated Macaw is in critical danger of extinction. Only about 300 individuals are found in the wild, in one estranged area in Bolivia, South-America. During the 1980's, thousands of these parrots reached the bird markets around the world, after they were illegally captured from the wild. This is considered to be the main reason for their diminished numbers in the wild.
