The Jerusalem Zoo: breeding pair at the Wet Side Story exhibit
The habitat and distribution areas of the Short-clawed otters are along streams and in freshwater marshes, mangrove swamps and sea-shores in South-eastern Asia. They will prey on almost any creature smaller than themselves, but their main prey items are crabs, small fish and mollusks. The reduced claws and webbing allow them to find their prey in the mud more easily and better handling of their prey items. Their social structure consists of extended families – parents and several generations of offspring. Short-clawed otters are threatened due to habitat destruction, hunting and growing competition over food with humans.
