Scorpion

Scientific name:
Scorpines
Distribution: Meditereniean
In israel: Not threatened
Jerusalem Zoo: Underground world
Scorpions belong to the class Arachnida and have eight legs like their relatives the spiders. However, they also have two pedipalps (claws) and venom that is injected through a sting at the end of the abdomen. Scorpions do not have a tail! It is actually the hind of the abdomen. All scorpions are carnivorous. They catch their prey with their claws and then sting it, injecting the venom which paralyses the prey. Scorpions can be found all over the world and have adapted to various climates and habitats, except for Polar regions. In Israel, they can be found all over the country. They are not in danger of extinction, although their natural habitats are being disturbed due to human intervention. When not foraging, scorpions hide in various shelters. Some hide under rocks or bark and others dig burrows. For instance, The species scorpio, that is found in Israel dig spiral tunnels that can reach a depth of 75 cm. Scorpions are solitary animals. The female gives birth to live young, who climb on their mother’s back immediately after birth and stay there for several days before embarking on independent lives. A scorpion’s cuticle (body cover) glows under UV light. You can observe the scorpions at the Underground world Exhibit.
