Giant African snail

Giant African snail

Scientific name: Achatina fulica
Situation in the wild: Common
The Jerusalem Zoo: Exhibit at the Small animal Building
This species of snail is considered the largest of land snails, and there are documentations of individuals reaching an impressive size of 15X35cm. Originally from East Africa, African giant snails were imported to many countries to be farmed for their flesh. However, they often escaped from captivity and established population in many new regions around the world, where they cause huge damages to agricultural crops and to local snail species. They have no social system. Individuals meet for mating although they are hermaphrodites. Reproduction rate of these snails is very fast - adult snails can lay more than 1000 eggs per year! They feed on leaves and grass. If you have giant snails at home never release them to the wild. They are considered one of the worst invasive species in the world! You can observe the Giant African snail at the Small Animal Building.
