Cane toad

Scientific name: Bufo marinu
Situation in the wild:Common
The Jerusalem Zoo: Exhibit at the Tropical Aviary
The habitat and distribution area of the Cane toad are the Tropical forests of Central and South America. It can be found always near water reserves. It feeds mainly on various insects. The social structure of the Cane toad is solitary although during mating season the males tend to congregate near still or slow flowing water reserves, where they call the females. There is no relationship between the males and females following fertilization and no parental care of the tadpoles. The poison that the Cane toad secretes as a defense method makes it resistant to predators in many areas around the world. This species has been distributed by man in order to control harmful insects, but mostly they have caused more harm than benefit. In many regions, including Australia, the Cane toad has itself become a pest as it has invaded many islands and areas in North America, Australia and the Caribbean islands. You can view the Cane toad at the recently renovated Tropical Aviary, here at the Jerusale Biblical Zoo.
