Eastern snake-necked Turtle

Eastern snake-necked Turtle

Scientific name: Chelodina longicollis
Situation in the wild: Common
The Jerusalem Zoo: Exhibit at the Tropical Aviary
The habitat and distribution areas of the Eastern snake-necked Turtle are the fresh water reservoirs of Australia. This species is a carnivore feeding on Insects, Invertebrates, Fish and other animals of right size. This Turtle live mostly in crowds with no distinguishable social structure. By name, it is also known as "stinker" because of the smell it secretes when close to danger. The Turtle folds its long neck to one side in order to protect its head as opposed to other species that retract their short neck into the shell. You can observe the Eastern snake-necked Turtle at the recently renovated Tropical Aviary, here at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo.
