Situation in the wild: not threatened
The Biblical Zoo: individuals at the Australian yard.
The Argus monitor belongs to the reptile family. Its habitat and distribution is mainly tropical and sub-tropical areas North-West Australia and New Guinea, typically near water sources. The Argus monitor is a predator that feeds on any living animal that it can prey upon: crustaceans, fish, birds, small mammals, reptiles and insects. Its social structure is solitary. The male is significantly larger than the female. Characteristically, the Argus monitor digs deep burrows, or invades existing burrows, and tends to stay in them for long periods. The Argos monitor can stand on his to hind limbs, whilst leaning on this tail. This position helps to expand its view in order to identify prey or threat.
